We spent a wonderful Saturday with a group of terrific artists. We explored the basic of altering books. This was the first in a series of three workshops focused on Altered Books. It was so much fun and very inspiring!

Heartstring Boxes

The Heartstring Box Workshop was so much fun! Eight Saturday Sisters braved the snowy weather and made it to the workshop. Wan and I were so delighted at the completed boxes.

Georgeann decided to honor her daughter by creating a soccer mom inspired box.

Lorna thought that a box with the ability to display the four seasons would be perfect.

Dolores and Caroline created from their hearts with beautiful fairy tale inspired boxes.

Michele titled her box Fly and built an inspirational box focused on new beginnings. Angela created a box for dear friends that are getting married. Her box included delightful pictures of the young loves and she chose rich colors to make the box pop. Patti's box centered around a beautiful picture of a young woman and she added XOX to bring the theme together. Erica chose beautiful graphic images of hands and deep colors of blue and green.

Wan and I are excited about our upcoming workshops and know that every time we bring the Saturday Sisters together we learn something new. You are all so thoughtful in your approach to art and life.

Holiday Social - A Big Success

The Saturday Sisters Holiday Social was a big success. 15 artists attended and created lovely whimsical microscope slide ornaments. Anita hosted the event and her home was a winter wonderland. We are very fortunate to have a new Saturday Brother. Welcome Mark! Thanks to everyone for making this a wonderful art filled get together.

I am looking forward to the new year and filling it with Saturday Sisters workshops and socials. See you all very soon.

Holiday - Saturday Sisters Social

Enjoy the holiday season with the Saturday Sisters. We are hosting a Holiday Social on Saturday morning December 5th from 9:30 - 12:00. Coffee, tea and refreshments will be served. A Very Special Saturday

A wonderful time was had by 14 artists at the first Saturday Sisters Social. We learned about art inspirations, creating a wonderful art workspace environment and the motivation that continues to drive us to create beautiful art.
There was a mix of paintings, collage, altered cigar boxes, ceramics and fibers. The stories that accompanied each piece of art were unique and held special meaning to each of the artists. There is so much thought and creativity that goes into everything that we do and it was amazing to learn that most of the artists like to be around people but find that most of the creating is accomplished alone in their home studios.

I am excited to let everyone know that we are looking for affordable ways to gather again and create art together. If you have special artwork that you would like to share with the group please send your pictures and we will get them posted. We are looking forward to the next event and hope that many more artists will come and be inspired.

Summer was busy for the Saturday Sisters. Many art projects were completed, vacations were taken and inspiration abounded. After a long enjoyable summer we are ready to start our Fall Saturday Sisters Workshops. We will start the series with a Saturday Sisters Social on October 17th. This is a great opportunity to meet each other, share art inspirations and art projects. We will be meeting in the Providence Country Club area of Charlotte. Mosaic Frame Workshop...

Learn the art of Pique Assiette. This style of mosaic incorporates pieces of broken ceramics - plates, dishes, cups, tiles - and other found objects into the design. You will learn how to use traditional mosaic techniques to create a picture frame using bits and pieces of broken dishes and other ceramics.
You will leave the workshop with a beautiful

picture frame created by you with that special picture in mind. The picture frame is 8 x 8 and will hold a 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 picture or mirror. You will be able to explore a wide range of colors, textures and choices for your special picture frame. We have gathered unique bits and pieces of dishes, pottery and ceramics. You may also bring your own dishes and ceramic pieces that hold a special memory for you.

Saturday Sisters Art Workshop hiatus is in effect. After careful consideration we are going to be offering workshops up to four times per year. (Once each season). The good news is we will be having them in North Carolina and in Maine. So keep an eye out. The workshops will include, Assemblage, Making Art from found objects, Techniques, Altering Books/Boxes, JOCO Boxes, and Art made from items collected in nature (Shells, Bark, Twigs, Rocks, etc). Saturday Sisters Art is presenting a workshop on January 10th from 10-3 in Charlotte.

"Rules for 2009" We will be creating our own rule books for 2009. During this workshop we will be altering pages with ephemera, found objects, fiber, paint, stamps and writing our rules and resolutions for a healthy and happy new year. You will learn how to alter found objects and turn them into beautiful art filled book. We will supply everything you will need and lunch! Bring a piece of art that you would like to share with the group. From 3-4 we will have a gallery showcasing everyone's art.

The cost for this Saturday Sisters Workshop is $75.00. The fee is due when you reserve your space. The class will be held in the Providence Country Club area of Charlotte.

November Workshop was Fun, Fun, Fun...

What a great day. The November workshop "Thankful Box & Journal" class was terrific. It is always amazing to see so many different interpretations. The class members learned altering/art techniques and presentation. We demonstrated at the technique table, how to use paint, washes, tinting, utilizing found objects, alter photos, paper and antique ephemera as well as the composition and placement of objects. We also shared tips and tricks (there are many) for adhering objects with matte gel medium, glue, wire, brads, screws, hammer & nails as well as liquid nails and hot glue guns. These gals were quick studies, and their boxes and journals are absolutely beautiful.

Thankful Box Workshop...

I cannot believe in a few short weeks it will be the second Saturday of November. (8th)! At Saturday Sisters, We have been busy getting cool objects together to embellish the boxes, and a wide selection of plain journals and antique books to embellish. The workshop is an interpretation of a journal in a special box. You will leave the workshop with a special journal to write notes, paragraphs or even chapters of what you are thankful for, and you can keep it in a fantastic Arty box. The box itself is wooden, and waiting for your special touch. We will teach you a few cool techniques for painting and embellishing your box with metal, paper and image transfers. You will be able to explore a wide range of colors, textures and choices for your special "Thankful Box".

On Saturday, November 8th we will start our day at 10 am and end at 3pm. We will break for a yummy lunch. After the class we would love to have you stay and share a piece of art you brought along. You will have an opportunity to see what inspires other artist's in the group and they will also have the pleasure of getting to know what inspires you.

Art Workshop, Fun, Fun, Fun...

Wowza. The first Saturday Sisters Event was a blast.
Everyone laughed, joked, talked and learned art techniques. Our class was a mix of novice, and working artists. We taught basic techniques and introduced the types of materials we typically use.

The best thing about "Altered Art" is there are no mistakes. When you look at the slide show you will see that EVERYONE can be an Artist. At the end of the class everyone left with a piece of Art. Now that is cool! If you haven't signed up for an upcoming workshop yet, now is the time.

Art Workshops Are in Full Swing...

At Saturday Sisters we are driven by what inspires us. It could be as diverse as the colors of a sunset or a dinner with a group of artists or even a butterfly landing on some autumn blooming Golden Rod. Whatever the inspiration some type of artistic beep goes off in our brain and an arty idea is hatched. We are putting together all of the components for our November workshop, "Thankful Boxes". This workshop will incorporate a highly decorated box, (decoupage, image transfers and paint) along with an embellished journal. More on this workshop in a future posting. The date will be the second Saturday in November.(November 8th)10-3. Sign-up now to save a place.

Upcoming:Our friend Nina Bagley is fun, talented and a great inspiration to us. She embraces nature, the seasons and the natural world around her. She is also wicked funny and did I mention, wowza, can she create jewelry and other nature inspired embellished treasures. Keep an eye out for a future workshop with Nina & Saturday Sisters sometime soon. We have not nailed down a date but it will be sheer magic to be able to create a workshop around her multi-talented artistic skill set.

Finding Your Creative Muse...

We have heard from so many folks how interested they are in doing something creative, anything creative! This is a common thought for many people particularly in the middle of their lives.It is a phenomenal time to explore and get in touch with the creative muse that lies within each of us.
At Saturday Sisters we decided to create a cool and fun workshop schedule in a terrific venue to fill this need. We have worked hard to create a roster of really fun and creative workshops.

Wow, how fun would it be to be able to spend a Saturday with really fun folks who happen to share your common interest in "Art"?
Consider your problem solved, Saturday Sisters Art Workshops is the perfect solution.
We love to create magical pieces of "Assemblage Art".
What is that you ask?
Well, simply put, it is a movement that has taken many turns over the years. Altered books, Joseph Cornell inspired boxes, interesting and sometimes odd but always arty sculptures incorporating found objects, ephemera, words, letters, numbers, photos, DIY and ect. (the list of possibilities is endless). This is true mixed media art in a mixed media platform.
We are excited to be offering a different class the second Saturday of every month. The classes are held in the Providence Country club area of South Charlotte.
Our class in October is "Arty Dress Forms". In November we are planning to make cool boxes with a theme of “Thankful for our blessings” and also we will experiment the world of image transfers. In the month of December we are excited to explore and be inspired by Joseph Cornell. We will be creating shadow style boxes with the mood of the holidays.

Second Saturday Art Workshop,October 11th...

When wandering through an issue of Somerset Studios Magazine or an afternoon out at galleries have you imagined that you could create something just as wonderful? Saturday Sisters Art is presenting a workshop on October 11th from 10-3 in Charlotte.

"Arty Dress Forms". You will learn the art of decoupage/cutting, folding curling and wax over paper. We will supply everything you will need and lunch! You will need to bring a piece of art that you would like to share with the group. From 3-4 we will have a gallery of everyones work and share a glass of wine.
